1:00 – 3:00  Overview and the Potential Stages of Cancer Treatment 

We will discuss the various stages of cancer treatment from diagnosis, medical decisions

various medical treatments, through recurrence and possibly facing death. We will explore

the issues and challenges typically faced at each phase.

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1.     List the stages and decision making issues related to a cancer diagnosis.

2.     Identify at least 1 issue for which clinical hypnosis would be appropriate for each stage or phase of cancer treatment

 3:15 – 5:30  Empowering Patients with Cancer Through Self-Hypnosis Training

Teaching self-hypnosis facilitations, and how to address clients’ questions regarding myths and misconceptions. Practice teaching self -hypnosis techniques.

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:.

1.     Teach at least two different self-hypnosis facilitation methods.

2.     Teach clients to recognize at least 3 common indicators of trance.

3.     Explain Self-hypnosis in a way that a lay person can understand.

11:00 –1:00  Developing Suggestions for Chemotherapy, Surgery, Immunotherapy, and Radiation therapy and Practice Sessions.

We will discuss each of the major treatment modalities and suggestions that will assist with the issues and challenges of each.

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to: 

1.     Recognize at least two issues and challenges faced by cancer patients dealing with each of the primary treatment modalities; surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

2.     Construct an hypnotic suggestion for each of the issues and challenges they identify.

3.      Create at least two suggestions for reducing anxiety

4.      Create at least 2 suggestions for sleep

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop the participant will be able to:

1.     Identify which hypnotic phenomena can assist cancer patients with the varying treatments and be able to utilize them with 3 of the issues and challenges patient’s face.

2.     Facilitate  a patient's developing their own healing images hypnotically

3.     Create a metaphor for healing based on the patient’s words and concepts.

The Integration of Clinical Hypnosis with Patients in Cancer Care

Advanced level training in Clinical Hypnosis A Virtual Workshop November 10 & 11, 2023 Holly Forester-Miller, PhD, LCMHC

This workshop is designed for advanced practitioners who work with, or wish to start working with, patients with cancer. It will be an interactive, hands-on workshop.  We will discuss the patients’ needs at different points in their cancer journey and during treatments.

Participants will learn how they can assist cancer patients with using hypnosis for managing the issues, symptoms, and challenges they face and how to develop effective hypnotic approaches and suggestions The presenter will also outline the protocol for a 4 week long self-hypnosis class for cancer patients that she has offered for 20 years. And the pilot study research on this class will be presented. The participants will learn 3 self-hypnosis techniques that are taught to the class participants which they can quickly and easily teach to their patients.

We will discuss the use of language, especially as it relates to the potential side effects and symptoms of the patient’s chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery treatments.  Additional issues that will be addressed include resistance, referrals, informed consent, and reframing. The presenter will discuss the applications of various hypnotic phenomena with cancer patients. Participants will have the opportunity to interact and participate in several experiential exercises dispersed throughout the workshop. The presenter will share from her 35+ years of experience of integrating hypnosis in cancer care. The emphasis will be on providing specific “how-tos” in formulating techniques for working with patients with cancer that participants can use in their practices.

After this workshop participants will have specific techniques and suggestions that they can take back to their office and immediately utilize with clients/patients to help enhance their quality of life, help them be more comfortable during treatments, and expand their posssibilities for healing.
