A Virtual Workshop

This workshop is designed to be a practical guide for how to use clinical hypnosis to help clients/patients with medical issues. It is designed for mental health and medical professionals who have completed Level 1 and 2 clinical hypnosis training and who assist clients with medical concerns or who wish to start doing so. It will be an interactive, hands-on, and experiential workshop.

We will discuss how to do a thorough intake, the 7 dimensions of a symptom, how to conceptualize a case, how to develop a treatment plan, and the clients/patients varying needs at different points in their journey and during various treatments. Emphasis will be placed on how to develop appropriate suggestions and choose appropriate hypnotic techniques based on the particular needs of the client/patient. The presenter will share from her 40 years of experience of integrating clinical hypnosis in her practice and in her own life. The major emphasis will be on providing specific “how-tos” in formulating techniques for working with clients with medical issues.

After this workshop participants will have specific techniques and suggestions that they can take back to their office and immediately utilize with clients/patients to help enhance their quality of life, and expand their posssibilities for healing. Additionally, they will have a framework they can use in addressing cases including how to do a thorough intake, how to research medical issues, how to conceptualize a case, and how to develop a treatment plan including formulating appropriate suggestions.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1.     Explain Medical Hypnosis in clear concise lay terms

2.     Can list 3 appropriate sources for researching information about medical issues.

3.     Can identify the 7 dimensions of a symptom

4.     Demonstrate the ability to incorporate hypnotic education in an intake interview

5.     Identify at least 2 issues for which clinical hypnosis would be appropriate based on the practice interviews.

11:00 – 1:00    Techniques and Their Application for Medical Concerns:

Education, Metaphors, Direct Suggestion, Visualization, Hypnotic Phenomena, Exploratory and Insight-Oriented Techniques Identifying earliest signs of when difficulties are starting.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1.     Identify two client/patient issues that hypnotic phenomena might be useful in addressing.

2.     Construct an approach to helping that utilizes hypnotic phenomena for each of those issues.

3.     Differentiate when it is appropriate to use which hypnotic technique for 2 different medical concerns

4.     Facilitate a client/patient developing their own healing imagery.

 1:30  - 3:45     Utilizing Hypnosis with Patients with Cancer and Other Serious Illnesses

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1.     Identify at least two issues faced by patients with cancer in dealing with chemotherapy, and be able to develop an hypnotic approach for each of those issues

2.     Identify at least two issues faced by patients with cancer in dealing with radiation therapy, and develop an hypnotic approach for each of those issues

3.     Identify at least two possible psychological issues for patients with serious illness and develop hypnotic approaches to utilize with them.

4:00  - 6:00     Hypnosis in the Preparation for Surgery

Common Surgical Concerns and Developing Hypnotic Suggestions

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1.     Summarize 2 current research findings for the use of hypnosis with surgical related concerns.

2.     Identify at least two physiological issues faced by surgery patients and construct an hypnotic suggestion for each of those issues

3.     Identify at least two possible psychological issues faced by surgery patients and  construct an hypnotic suggestion for each of those issues

Case Studies, Conceptualization, and Treatment Planning, Refining Skills and Treatment Application Practice

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1.     Assess a case and determine how clinical hypnosis might be utilized.

2.     Develop a treatment plan for a medical concern that includes clinical hypnosis

3.     Demonstrate utilizing 2 clinical hypnosis techniques with a client/patient with a medical concern.
