Self-Hypnosis Class for Patients with Cancer or Chronic Illnesses

Learn how to use Self-Hypnosis to help in managing cancer or chronic illness and the symptoms, reducing pain and stress, managing the side effects of medications and radiation therapies and enhancing quality of life.

This class is designed to teach self-hypnosis to patients so they can use this tool to help in managing the symptoms and side effects of chronic illness and cancer and their treatments. Research has shown self-hypnosis with patients to be helpful in improving quality of life and sleep, reducing side effects of treatments, pain, hot flashes, and anxiety, and to be empowering and increase ones self-efficacy (Forester-Miller, 2017; Wortzel & Spiegel, 2017).

The self-hypnosis class consists of four 90-minute class sessions; once a week for 4 consecutive weeks. Each participant will also meet with the teacher individually for 30 minutes once during the 4 weeks to assist them with making a recording of suggestions for their current circumstances. The classes are designed to be small to encourage interaction between participants. During the weekly sessions the participants will learn about hypnosis, trance, suggestion, myths and misconceptions regarding hypnosis, brief history of hypnosis, three different self-hypnosis facilitation techniques, the power of suggestion, hypnotic and implicative language, and how to create effective suggestions. The class will be very interactive and participants will have the opportunity to practice several self-hypnosis techniques, as well as practice developing suggestions to assist with all phases of their treatment. Some of the topics included will be preparation for surgery, countering side effects of medications and chemotherapy and radiation therapy, digestive tract issues, sleep, hot flashes, anxiety related to treatments and procedures, stress management, relaxation, and a brief look at managing pain.

Caregivers

Caregivers may sit-in with you in the class for a $100 fee. Caregivers will listen and learn the skills of self-hypnosis and developing suggestions. They will be able to use self-hypnosis for themselves for stress management and relaxation. Most importantly, they will understand the tools their loved one is using and be able to assist them with it.
